SHARE/LOVE
UNIVERSITY JUNE/2008
This section provides interesting, useful and hopefully
entertaining information about a variety of health
enhancing topics. The following are articles I've
written regarding an ongoing WELLNESS LECTURE SERIES
that I've offered as a public service through my office
and the Unity Church in Charlottesville. Some of the
topics include "The Anti-Inflammatory Diet", "Life
Coaching", "Pilates",
"Non-Violent Communication"
and the "Power of Prayer and Affirmations". These
particular talks have already passed, but as new talks
are scheduled, I will update the website. I hope you
enjoy! Here are a few more:
Steve's
Health Awareness Resource Exchange (SHARE)
As I contemplate and
celebrate my 20th year of chiropractic practice in
Charlottesville, I am filled with thankfulness... I
still love and am passionate about what I do. Learning
and sharing new healing techniques and information
continues to be thoroughly enjoyable. Gaining the trust
of so many people is an honor, and it's exciting
whenever I hear how I have helped improve someone's life
- this, of course, is the greatest blessing. Twenty
years is a long time. With this in mind, I have a big
announcement to make. Many of you who know me have
probably already heard this through the grapevine, and
yes, it's true. I wanted to wait awhile before
announcing this, just to make sure it was going to take.
Alright, here goes...
I'M PREGNANT! Oh, my God. No, not with another child (I
love my three and I'm done). I'm pregnant with an idea.
I'm thinking about what I can give back to my patients
and to the community. I've always liked the concept of
"health empowerment". I feel it is my job, first and
foremost, to properly assess and treat people so that
they can reach their health goals. I have come to
understand that for treatment to reach maximum
effectiveness, it must have a strong "active" component.
By "active", I mean engaging YOU - the patient - in your
own healing process. It is not enough for me to
passively treat you with chiropractic adjustments,
physical therapy, acupuncture, etc. It is vital for me
to supply you with an array of other modalities that
will include rehabilitative exercises, posture
correction, diet and lifestyle changes, so that you can
help yourself get well and stay well.
Since most people come
to me with musculoskeletal issues, most of the patient
education that I do concentrates on the physical realm.
True wellness occurs not just in the body, but also the
heart, mind and spirit. Our wonderful community of
Charlottesville is home to an abundance of gifted,
insightful and creative practitioners, with truly useful
information to share. My idea is to create a bi-monthly
forum featuring many of Charlottesville's talented
citizens, which can introduce my patients and members of
the community to ways they can joyfully improve their
lives... body, heart, mind and spirit. The idea is to
provide dynamic education which aspires to be not just
informative, but transformative.
This series will kick
off on February 15th and will continue on the third
Thursday of every other month, from 7:30-8:30, either at
my office, the Chiropractic Family Wellness Center
located across from Albemarle High School (the first
class, February 15th) or at the Unity Church sanctuary
on Hydraulic Rd. (the rest of the classes). It is my
intention that these talks will provide valuable
information and also be fun and interactive.
Refreshments will be served, handouts and activities
will be shared, and questions will be welcomed. These
talks are free and open to all members of the community.
More information can be found on my website:
www.drstevedc.com I am calling this project "Steve's
Health Awareness Resource Exchange", a.k.a. SHARE.
Here's a tentative
schedule for the upcoming talks. An in depth article
will appear in ECHO a few weeks before each event.
Steve's Health
Awareness Resource Exchange (SHARE) Presents:
1)Thursday, February 15th... Dr. Steve VeGodsky,
Chiropractor, Physician Acupuncture practitioner
presents: THE NUTRITIONAL ADJUSTMENT MEETS JEDI HEALING
(click for more info).
This class will empower
you with tips on using the Anti-Inflammatory Diet (AID),
supplements, spices, cooking techniques and Low Energy
Laser Therapy (LELT) to reduce inflammation and create
healthier, more energetic and pain-free bodies.
Inflammation is a stealthy stalker common to many
diseases of the circulatory, digestive, immune and
musculoskeletal systems. The AID has been proven to have
a wide range of health benefits with healing
implications for chronic pain, fibromyalgia,
osteoarthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome and many other
conditions. LELT has shown great promise in reducing
inflammation and providing quicker healing time with
acute injuries as well as chronic musculoskeletal
conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis
elbow.
2)Thursday, April 19th... Bev Wann, M.Ed in Counseling,
Certified Co-Active Coach, Nia Instructor and Leadership
Development Consultant presents: LEAD A LIFE YOU LOVE/
LOVE THE LIFE YOU LEAD - AN INTRODUCTION TO LIFE
TRAINING.
The poet Rumi invites
us to "be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what
(we) really love." Learn how the process of life
coaching helps people discern their heartfelt desires
and then supports them in bringing more of what they
really love into their daily lives.
Bev works as a life and an executive coach, partnering
with people seeking more fulfilling careers and lives,
or working with leaders to increase their ability to
make a difference. She has more than twenty years'
experience providing coaching, training and facilitation
services to non-profit, government and educational
organizations. She also enjoys teaching Nia, a body-mind
movement practice. Bev designs and leads workshops and
retreats that bring together the complementary practices
of coaching and Nia.
3)Thursday, June 21st... Diana Bower, R.N., F.N.P with
16 years experience in Pilates exercise and
rehabilitation presents: PILATES, HOW TO MOVE GRACEFULLY
AND FUNCTIONALLY THROUGH YOUR LIFE GAINING STRENGTH,
FLEXIBILITY AND TONE.
This class will give the participant the basic
principles of core stabilization through Pilates
exercises that will, with practice, encourage better
posture, relieve pain, improve range of motion and
stimulate the neuromuscular system. I believe exercise
should be fun, safe, and a part of everyday life - not
just an hour a week at the gym. I also believe exercise
and movement are integral parts of healing and
maintaining health, both physically and emotionally.
4)Thursday, August 16th... Greg Kendrick, Certified
Trainer for the Center for Nonviolent Communication,
Founder of Basileia LLC & the Charlottesville Center for
Compassionate Communication presents: SPEAK PEACE IN A
WORLD OF CONFLICT: AN INTRODUCTION TO NONVIOLENT
COMMUNICATION.
Nonviolent
communication (NVC), is a language and consciousness of
compassion that can dramatically improve our
relationships, both personal and professional. NVC
focuses our attention on what is "alive" in this moment
- what you are feeling and the needs behind it, and what
I am feeling and my needs - rather than focusing on who
is right and who is wrong. NVC leads us to a deep
connection between people that flows from honesty and
vulnerably expressing our own "aliveness" and
emphatically listening to the "aliveness" in the other
person, rather than being nice or polite. NVC leads us
to holding everyone's needs equally and seeking
solutions that meet everyone's needs and enrich
everyone's lives, rather than to give out of duty,
obligation, guilt or fear of punishment. After having
owned and managed two different businesses for almost 20
years (one a software technology training firm and the
other an investment fund), Gregg founded an
organization, Basileia LLC (www.basileia.org),
whose vision is to co-create organizations where people
thrive amidst authenticity, connection, interdependence
and solidarity using tools of Nonviolent Communication.
Inherent within this transformation is a new vision of
"leader" as someone who leads through power-with rather
than power-over. Gregg works with a variety of
organizations including businesses, schools, churches,
government groups.
5)Thursday, October 18th... Reverend Patricia Gulino
Lansky, of the Charlottesville Unity Church, presents:
"PRAYER, MEDITATION AND AFFIRMATIONS: POWER TOOLS FOR
DREAM BUILDING."
Right within each one
of us resides an amazing arena of possibilities. We have
all that we need to make our deepest desires come to
life. Can you imagine what your life will be like with
clear access to your unlimited potential to heal
yourself and to manifest your dreams? This experiential
evening will begin a spiritual process of equipping
participants with tools to mobilize manifestation. We
will explore powerful techniques of positive mindset
including prayer, meditation and affirmations, that
place the individual in the flow of creating what their
heart yearns for. There are over 700 scientific studies
verifying that these techniques positively affect our
neurophysiology. Studies show that high blood pressure
can be normalized; wounds, heart attacks and headaches
are able to heal quicker; and anxiety can be decreased.
The relaxation response from these techniques allows for
brain synchrony/coherence to occur - both front and back
of the brain and left and right hemispheres work in
harmony. The ability to cope is heightened and the
person is better able to resist new stress. These are
just some of the scientifically verified results of
prayer, meditation and affirmations. Join us to learn
and practice these powerful, life changing tools.
Rev. Patricia Galino Lansky is an ordained Unity
minister. Patricia and her husband, Rev. Don Lansky are
co-ministers at Unity Church in Charlottesville, on
Hydraulic Rd. She is also a Licensed Clinical Social
Worker with more than 20 years' experience and enjoys
empowering others to be all they can be.
6)Thursday, December 6th... Rose Beauchamp, MFA,
Lecturer in Dance at the University of Virginia and
Certified Laban Movement Analyst presents: JOYFUL HEALTH
ENHANCEMENT THROUGH MOVEMENT AND DANCE.
Our bodies are
perfectly designed for movement. This workshop will take
a look at how people of all backgrounds and abilities
can use movement and dance to enhance their overall
health and well-being. It will begin to touch upon
elements of Laban movement analysis including
Developmental Patterning and Movement Efficiency. Learn
how to reduce postural stress often associated with
pain, stiffness and discomfort and how to move and dance
in a relaxed and easeful way.
Yours in health,
Dr. Steve
